The drawing above provides a step-by-step, keyed illustration of the
water-proofing procedures to follow for basement walls (refer to number in sketch):
1 -- Install proper drainage system around the basement as required by local codes.
(Our Form-A-Drain® system replaces conventional drain installation.)
2 -- Clean the surfaces where the base of the wall meets the footing, apply a
1/2" bead of sealant along this joint and blend it into the footing below and the
wall above to provide a water-tight seal.
3 --
Apply
60 mil water-proofing membrane to obtain a water-tight covering over the entire below-grade
surface extending 6 - 12 inches above finished grade.
4 --
Cover
below-grade membrane with drain mat to protect wall from any standing
water.
5 -- Backfill the basement wall with soil that is free of construction debris and
large rocks. We recommend that you protect the basement water-proofing
membrane from damage that can occur
during backfilling by covering the entire surface with our Sure-Drain
drainage mat as outlined in number 4 above. Backfill after the concrete has cured seven days, the basement
floor is poured and the first floor is in place. Backfill should be properly compacted and
graded so that water does not collect around the basement walls.
